What to do in Zimbabwe the week of July 18th

CONTROLLED BURNS: If you see a fire in a open field, don’t panic. This is the season of clearing fields from the last harvest by fire. They are usually controlled burns with someone watching from a distance. However, if you notice the fire is getting close to property or roads, do alert the people nearby. There is property damage and fatalities every year.

Travel Tip

Don’t get your hair done BEFORE the trip. Get it done DURING the trip in Zimbabwe and save hundreds.

This week our travel tip will be focused on rest and relaxation, which means different things to different people. We are talking about downtime.

The hustle and bustle of the big cities, or even a fully packed vacation itinerary can leave you feeling drained.

In the larger cities, Harare, Bulawayo, Kwekwe, Mutare, Masvingo, Victoria Falls, you will have no trouble finding a small coffee shop to sitdown, read a book. Some of them even have free wifi, but you have to ask. Some will have freshly squeezed juice as well as a light menu, but may close earlier than the bars. Others open late and have live music.

You can expect to spend about $2usd on a cup of coffee. Some places have instant coffee, so you have to be clear you want the one from the machine.

Milk is a standard to put in hot drinks. You have to say no milk, yes. even for an Americano, you have to say no milk. And no, they don’t understand when you say you want it black.

For those who like a good haircut, or beard trim as part of their r&r, you’re in luck. Services that could run you upwards of $200 abroad can be had for as little as $20.

The salons in the malls. generally have access to more reliable electricity, so you can expect to be pampered with a steamed cloth to the face, after your shave or cut.

Pedicures and manicures again are super affordable, and the atmosphere in most of them will release any stress you have.
