Is there uber in Zimbabwe? The answer is yes and no. There are 2 major companies that service the country providing mobile taxi services like Uber. One is Vaya Africa and the other is InDrive. They will both want you to confirm your registration by sending you a text and as well as creating an account. They both allow you to preload a wallet using international credit cards as well as local payment systems. You can setup the app before you travel, but I would recommend you update to your local number once you’re in the country, unless you have a dual sim phone.
Their services include transportation, parcel and food delivery. Vaya has the additional option of ambulance service as well. Their location technologies are great for finding you where you are, which is helpful, given the lack of street signs.
The only downside I could see, is the lack of availability of in smaller communities, due to a lack of drivers enrolled on the app. If you know someone in smaller towns, encourage them to get on the app as a driver, so the services continue to grow across the country.
Traditional taxi services are also available with lots of companies available with a simple taxi google search. If you’re staying in a city for a while, it’s recommended to develop a relationship with a taxi driver to assist you with your commutes, if you’re not comfortable with public transit.
Finally, a more traditional taxi service is the Combi system across the country. They may seem unorganized, but by asking others you can always find the exact location where they pickup and dropoff. If you don’t know where you are going, but have a landmark, ALL the passengers will make it THEIR business to make sure you get where you’re going. Often the conductor will be willing to talk to the person where you are going to confirm the directions and if transfers are involved, don’t be suprised if they wait to inform the next combi you need to take about where you are going.
