Travel tip: Holiday closings
All Zimbabwean national holidays are listed in publicly available calendars on the internet. What’s interesting however is that the formal sector stores usually close by 1pm the day before the holidays in order to allow their staff to begin the holidays.
The smaller informal sector stores and stalls are usually open, however even they operate with less vendors than normal and you may see increased pricing. Transportation between cities and within cities is usually increased pricing to reflect the higher demand, and or the lower demand. The frequency of public transportation is also impacted.
Road safety during the holidays is an issue, as more drivers are on the road, and at times may be travelling longer distances and or may have travelled with only short breaks along the road as accommodation in smaller towns is hard to find online. Drinking and driving is also a factor that undermines road safety during the holidays.
When going to the villages, where google may say 30kms after turnoff from the main tarred road, some may underestimate the distance. Those 30kms may actually be a 3 hour drive due to road conditions.
