Travel tips: Traveling with kids

During a recent trip to Lusaka, Zambia, I was struggling to figure out what activities to take the kids. Watching YouTube videos about Lusaka, you would think its a boring place.

One youtuber even said, “one day in Lusaka is more than enough and seemed very bored. Ground trip planning isn’t easy, but a seemingly “uninteresting” place like Lusaka can provide lots of things to do.

The first step I recommend to appreciating any city is asking locals about trips that school groups do. You’ll often find the local museums, historical places and amusement areas this way.

The second recommendation is to check out the embassies and their social media pages. Often they will host social events that bring locals and Expats together.

The final recommendation would be to use public transportation as it usually plies the most visited areas in a city and will help you find hidden gems

What to do in Zimbabwe, the overall recommendation version

Kariba is a very popular destination for school trips as it has a waterpark, crocodile farm, boat cruise, legend of Nyaminami, game drives and some galleries and museums. You could spend a whole week in Kariba and feel like you left too soon.

Chinhoyi Caves is one of my personal favourite destinations. The mythology of it all and the contrast to the urban setting can help you stay entertained over and above the caves.

Masvingo Great Zimbabwe is the obvious winner in Masvingo, but there’s so much more to see. With the university hosted events now adding diversity to itinerary on top of the activities available at Lake Muturikwi.

Rusape has always been seen as a gateway city to Nyanga and Mutare. This is still true, but the city and locals have continued to invest in the vibrancy of the city. For a more laid back vacation, the city of Rusape delivers plenty green spaces and water along the Rusape dam.

Embassies in Zimbabwe often host social event and are very active on social media. Your own embassy may have a social events whatsapp group for you to be added to. Also, a Facebook or Instagram search of the different embassies will highlight their activities for you.
