Travel tips: NFL season and international sports

It’s my birthday this week, but that’s not what I’m excited about. It’s also NFL kickoff weekend, which is what I have been looking forward to since February.

Now when asking about the National Football League, you have to say American football, otherwise you’ll be directed to the Zimbabwean National Soccer team.

Most television providers have BBC sport or SABC sports, both of which sporadically cover an American football game. The other option is Supersport, which often has quite a few games and is available on the different service providers.

The other option is finding a sports bar, or international hotel chain lobby which both show games.

The only tricky part is the time when the games are played. The 11am eastern time games start around 5pm. This means the evening games are starting around midnight and most bars close early on Sundays.

All that being said, there are locals and expats who are really committed to the game, and by asking around at the sports bars and gym, you can build your community.

September 9 The Mzilikazi memorial celebrations also known as the Umgubho ceremony, take place just outside Bulawayo at his graveside in Mhlahlandhela. Everyone attending is to meet outside Bulawayo city hall by 8am.
