Over the last week, we had the chance to sit down with Sebastian Zuze and Anthony Zuze, of Chiedza Retirement Advisory Services in Zimbabwe in preparation for the Men’s Health Conference in Chobe. He shared how his passion for retirement advisory came from the sudden passing of his father within months of a forced retirement and all weight shifted to him.
He was more intentional in preparing himself for retirement while working as an executive in Zimbabwe, to the point that he managed to retire at the age of 45. He started his advisory service to empower people of all ages, including the already retired, and those transitioning from the diaspora back to Africa.
What he didn’t say was, he’s intentionally rewriting his family legacy and experience with retirement through his son. Anthony, his son, spoke deeply of the need for youth to make long-term plans, to find a way to secure the bag, not just for today, but for tomorrow.
By incorporating Anthony in the business early, Sebastian is teaching him what he never learned in school and also creating a transition plan for the business itself. Very often seasoned business people don’t involve their children in their business for various reasons. I know for myself, it’s so difficult to watch my kids compete in competitive sport because it reminds me of the anxiety I felt as a competitive athlete. I’m glad they have chosen music as the outlet for their character development.
But had they chosen sports, it would have been easier for me to help them navigate as it’s an industry I’m familiar with and I could give them introductions to people they need to know and teach them things I learned in my own journey.
Alas, the power of legacy is lost on them in that regard, but like Sebastian, there’s so much more I can teach them by being around me and involved in other things I’m doing. The only missing link is, will they have the passion for those things that Anthony has?
